Wal-Mart CEO sees changes in consumers

by admin ·

Recession altering habits in the food and drugs that they buy

NEW YORK - Wal-Mart’s chief executive said on Sunday he sees changes in the habits of the chain’s customers as they contend with the recession, and also said Wal-Mart had offered to help the incoming Obama administration with health care and environmental issues.

“The number one issue today is (consumers’) concern about their job,” Lee Scott said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“In our pharmacy group, we have increases in prescription drugs, but not at the same rate it was,” he said. “What we’re seeing is an increase in self-treatment.”

Strained consumers are also changing the food they buy at Wal-Mart, Scott said. “We’re seeing an increase in food storage as people are cooking more at home,” he said. They are “using leftovers more extensively,” and buying more frozen food.

Small businesses are also changing how they buy goods, he said. Cash-strapped restaurant owners are visiting the stores more frequently to buy supplies as one day’s cash flow allows them to buy supplies for the following day.

Scott, who will retire in early 2009, also said he sees a role for Wal-Mart in the debate around issues such as the environment and health care, which he has previously said “profoundly” affect the chain’s shoppers and business.

Wal-Mart has “reached out” to President-elect Obama’s team to work on the U.S. health care and energy issues, he said, adding that people critical of Wal-Mart’s involvement in political debates were “on the wrong track.”

“These are not times to be self-serving,” he said. “We have a responsibility to participate.”

‘Boys overcome distractions, shut down Giants’

by admin ·

Dallas keeps its playoff hopes alive with a 20-8 win over NFC East rivals

The soap opera that is the Dallas Cowboys’ offense gets all the attention. The defense, however, is keeping them in the playoff hunt.

DeMarcus Ware added three sacks to his NFL-leading total and the Cowboys took down Eli Manning eight times on their way to a crucial 20-8 victory Sunday night in a game where all eyes were otherwise on Tony Romo, Terrell Owens and Jason Witten.

With everyone watching to see how Romo would appease the two main rivals for his offensive affection, he pulled a fast one by tossing touchdowns to third receiver Patrick Crayton and seldom thrown-to fullback Deon Anderson. Then, with 2:16 left and Dallas trying to manage the clock, rookie Tashard Choice broke off a victory-sealing 38-yard touchdown run.

Finally, the Cowboys could exhale. After a late loss in Pittsburgh and a week of locker-room turmoil, Dallas (9-5) was back in control of its wild-card chances.

“It wasn’t a pretty win but we got it done,” Owens said.

The Cowboys are guaranteed a playoff spot by winning their last two games, but it won’t be easy. Baltimore comes to Texas Stadium on Saturday night, then Dallas closes in Philadelphia.

The Giants (11-3) locked up the NFC East title when Dallas lost last Sunday, but suddenly things aren’t going so well for the reigning Super Bowl champions.

New York has lost consecutive games for the first time since starting 0-2 last season, with both losses coming since star receiver Plaxico Burress shot himself and was lost for the season. This one featured its fewest points of the season and its first regular-season game without a touchdown since November 2004.

A win would’ve given the Giants a first-round bye and breathing room in the race for the No. 1 playoff seed. Instead, they head home tied with Carolina for the top spot heading into their matchup with the Panthers on Sunday night.

Romo was 20-of-30 for 244 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He was sacked four times, including back-to-back plays at the end of the first quarter that left him wincing in pain. He didn’t miss a snap, but wasn’t moving as well as he usually does.

Witten caught five passes for 44 yards and Owens had three catches for 38 yards. T.O. would’ve had more than that on one play had he caught the first pass thrown his way, but he couldn’t haul it in, drawing boos from fans who also jeered him during pregame introductions.

“I think the coaches were accountable. That helped us,” Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said afterward, poking fun at it.

Fewer workers tack on vacations to business trips

by admin ·
Fewer business travelers are expected to bring their spouse, kids, golf clubs or sightseeing shoes on future business trips, new studies and booking trends indicate.

The down economy means fewer people can afford to tack on vacation time to a trip, and fewer people are willing to risk the negative perceptions that may exist about travel perks, says Peter Yesawich of Ypartnership, an Orlando-based travel research and marketing firm.

The economy is expected to speed the decline in dual-purpose trips, he says, but the trend has been falling out of favor for about seven years.

Only about 30% of business travelers said they brought along their spouse or kids — or just added some alone time — before, during or after a business trip in the past year, according to the Ypartnership/Yankelovich National Leisure Travel Monitor released in May. In 2000, 60% said they’d combined trips. Yesawich estimates the rate would be even lower today. “People would say, ‘It’s all about serious business now,’ ” he says.

Michael Steiner of Ovation Corporate Travel, a Manhattan-based agency, says Ovation’s corporate clients are especially cutting their weekend stays on domestic trips.

“Last year, they were more apt to stay a Friday and Saturday night, but this year, they’re coming home,” he says.

Phil Lapp, a snack foods sales manager from Lancaster, Pa., who’s on the road about half the time, says he hasn’t combined trips in several years, due to the increasingly competitive business environment and the demands of having two young children, ages 4 and 2. He doesn’t plan to do anything differently next year.

“Traveling now is difficult enough, but when you factor in trying to coordinate family schedules with business meetings, it creates a chaotic and sometimes distracting environment,” he says.

Some hotels and destinations, however, continue to see opportunity.

Seattle, which has eight Fortune 500 companies based in the region and has a healthy convention business, expects to keep drawing more dual-purpose visitors, says Tom Norwalk, CEO of Seattle’s Convention and Visitors Bureau. More business travelers, for instance, have been tacking on cruises before and after their trips, he says.

And the Cambria Suites at the airport at Savannah, Ga. — where a night’s stay costs around $100 a room — has continued to see around 15% of business guests stay an extra day, even during the stock market’s meltdown, says Hal Smith, the hotel’s general manager. Some guests bring golf clubs to play in the area, though most stay longer to take tours and enjoy the city’s historic district, he says.

Since the trend has endured this fall, Smith next year plans to offer new golf and tour packages to help offset the decline in business travel.

“That will encourage people to stay an extra day,” Smith says, “so instead of leaving Thursday afternoon, they might stay through Friday or Saturday.”

Everybody’s An Expert!by Jerry Flint

by admin ·

Bankruptcy is a good thing for Detroit–and other myths worth debunking.

I’ve never seen such misinformation floating around about the auto industry, whether it’s from New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman on the left or his colleague David Brooks on the right. They think Detroit should die. At least the Republican senators from Alabama and Kentucky have a reason for wanting to ruin Detroit. They don’t tell you, but their states have plants owned by Honda, Mercedes and Hyundai (Alabama) and Toyota(Kentucky). If General Motors goes down, the Midwest may sink into rubble, but Alabama and Kentucky will boom.

There’s a plus side to bankruptcy. Wrong. There’s no plus side. Name any existing auto company that has survived bankruptcy. Few people would be idiotic enough to buy a car from a bankrupt company. Trade-in value disappears. Warranties are worthless. Repair parts vanish. GM goes bankrupt on Monday and on Tuesday the only customers are vultures looking for giveaway deals. In fact, sales are probably collapsing now because of all the bankruptcy talk.

The government can appoint learned bureaucrats to run GM right. Have you ever heard of a successful government-run auto company? Sure, they work if all other cars are banned and they torture anyone who criticizes the design. I’ve seen some: the Trabi, built by East Germany, or the cars of the nationalized British auto industry until that industry died, or those Renaults when the French government ruled. Let’s not even mention the Soviet cars.

Will Unreliable Winehouse Finish New Record?

by admin ·

Island Records has reserved three studios across London in a bid to get the distracted songbird to show up for work.

When it comes to Amy Winehouse, it seems Island Records is hoping three will be the magic number. The record label has reportedly booked recording studios in the north, east, and west of London to increase the chances of the artist actually showing up to finish her much-anticipated follow-up to 2007’s Back to Black.

“Amy’s next record is one of the most eagerly anticipated in pop music so the record label isn’t taking any chances,” a source told UK newspaper Mirror [via Gigwise.com] “She does like an all-night bender so by booking three different venues, at least the record label are assured — on the law of averages — that she’ll turn up in one of them.”

To which we say: Really, Island Records? You think by providing a studio close enough to the singer’s hypothetical bender that you can guarantee her attendance? Because people on benders are usually pretty amenable to dropping in on their neighborhood recording studio? Really?
