‘Boys overcome distractions, shut down Giants’

by admin ·

Dallas keeps its playoff hopes alive with a 20-8 win over NFC East rivals

The soap opera that is the Dallas Cowboys’ offense gets all the attention. The defense, however, is keeping them in the playoff hunt.

DeMarcus Ware added three sacks to his NFL-leading total and the Cowboys took down Eli Manning eight times on their way to a crucial 20-8 victory Sunday night in a game where all eyes were otherwise on Tony Romo, Terrell Owens and Jason Witten.

With everyone watching to see how Romo would appease the two main rivals for his offensive affection, he pulled a fast one by tossing touchdowns to third receiver Patrick Crayton and seldom thrown-to fullback Deon Anderson. Then, with 2:16 left and Dallas trying to manage the clock, rookie Tashard Choice broke off a victory-sealing 38-yard touchdown run.

Finally, the Cowboys could exhale. After a late loss in Pittsburgh and a week of locker-room turmoil, Dallas (9-5) was back in control of its wild-card chances.

“It wasn’t a pretty win but we got it done,” Owens said.

The Cowboys are guaranteed a playoff spot by winning their last two games, but it won’t be easy. Baltimore comes to Texas Stadium on Saturday night, then Dallas closes in Philadelphia.

The Giants (11-3) locked up the NFC East title when Dallas lost last Sunday, but suddenly things aren’t going so well for the reigning Super Bowl champions.

New York has lost consecutive games for the first time since starting 0-2 last season, with both losses coming since star receiver Plaxico Burress shot himself and was lost for the season. This one featured its fewest points of the season and its first regular-season game without a touchdown since November 2004.

A win would’ve given the Giants a first-round bye and breathing room in the race for the No. 1 playoff seed. Instead, they head home tied with Carolina for the top spot heading into their matchup with the Panthers on Sunday night.

Romo was 20-of-30 for 244 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He was sacked four times, including back-to-back plays at the end of the first quarter that left him wincing in pain. He didn’t miss a snap, but wasn’t moving as well as he usually does.

Witten caught five passes for 44 yards and Owens had three catches for 38 yards. T.O. would’ve had more than that on one play had he caught the first pass thrown his way, but he couldn’t haul it in, drawing boos from fans who also jeered him during pregame introductions.

“I think the coaches were accountable. That helped us,” Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said afterward, poking fun at it.

Baseball players, agents, GMs set to wheel, deal in Las Vegas!

by admin ·
LAS VEGAS — Pete Rose, baseball’s all-time hits leader, is signing autographs for cash at Caesars Palace. Manny Pacquiao, who knocked out Oscar De La Hoya, is hanging out at the MGM Grand. The national rodeo finals are in town.

And, for the first time, baseball descended upon Las Vegas for its annual winter meetings, where every general manager has the opportunity to play poker with the fate of their franchise.

“It’s going to be crazy,” says veteran slugger Frank Thomas, who spent Saturday winning a charity poker tournament at The Venetian, and planned to cross Las Vegas Boulevard Sunday to start job-hunting at the Bellagio Hotel, site of the meetings. “I want to keep playing. I’m not done. I want to keep climbing the home-run (521) chart.

“I just hope CC (Sabathia) leaves a little money for the rest of us.”

Sabathia has already been offered the richest contract (six years, $140 million) for a pitcher in history from the New York Yankees. He is scheduled to meet with Boston and Milwaukee before leaving town today.

Vikings Beat Bears To Move Atop NFC North

by admin ·

Inches from an 11-point edge late in the first half, Matt Forte and the Chicago Bears hit the wall. The Minnesota Vikings turned around and quickly took the lead — in the game and in the division.

With a gutty goal-line stand and one big heave by Gus Frerotte, the Vikings grabbed control of the NFC North and sent Kyle Orton and the Bears home with a 34-14 loss Sunday night.

“If you’re going to win these tough games, you’ve got to make plays and you’ve got to capitalize,” Orton said. “Against a defense like this, you’re not going to have too many opportunities down there.”Inches from an 11-point edge late in the first half, Matt Forte and the Chicago Bears hit the wall. “If you’re going to win these tough games, you’ve got to make plays and you’ve got to capitalize,” Orton said. “Against a defense like this, you’re not going to have too many opportunities down there.”

Seconds after the Bears were stopped four times at the 1, Bernard Berrian was wide open up the sideline for a 99-yard touchdown pass from Frerotte.

“That’s the first time I’ve ever seen a 99-yard play, and I’ve been playing football since I was 8 years old,” said Vikings defensive end Jared Allen, who had three sacks. “That right there, that’s just a dagger in your chest. Defensively, if that happened to us, I’d be like, ’Holy smokes.”’

Orton’s team-record streak of 206 attempts without an interception ended with a thud. He threw three of them, and Minnesota (7-5) turned them into 17 second-half points. Orton finished 11-for-29 for 153 yards and, despite two touchdowns, suddenly looked more like the lost rookie who struggled through the 2005 season.

Basketball Legend Newell Dies At 93

by admin ·

Hall of Fame coach led Robertson, West, Lucas to Olympic title in 1960

Pete Newell coached his last game nearly a half-century ago, but his impact on basketball is felt at the game’s highest level even today.

The beloved Hall of Fame coach, who won an NCAA championship and an Olympic gold medal, and who later tutored some of the game’s greatest big men, died Monday. He was 93.

His death was confirmed by the University of California, the school Newell coached to a national title in 1959. Newell, who had been living near San Diego, had a serious lung operation in 2005.

Newell coached for 14 years at San Francisco, Michigan State and California before doctors advised him to give it up because of the emotional toll. His final coaching job came in the 1960 Olympics, when he took a U.S. team led by Oscar Robertson, West and Jerry Lucas on a dominant run to a gold medal in Rome.

Newell later returned to prominence with his famous “big men” camps. He instructed some of the game’s greatest stars, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, Shaquille O’Neal and Ralph Sampson.

Among Newell’s biggest admirers was Knight, whose teams practiced Newell’s style of patient, disciplined offense and tenacious, hardworking defense.

Billingsley plays blame game after rough outing

by admin ·

If Chad Billingsley is going to be an ace someday, his performance both during and after the game is going to need improvement. Not only did the 24-year-old right-hander fail to get out of the third inning of Friday’s 8-5 National League Championship Series loss against the Phillies, but he also shifted some of the blame to a teammate.
When asked repeatedly after the game what he thought went wrong, Billingsley kept saying it was “pitch selection.” What went wrong was that Billingsley allowed seven earned runs in just 2 1/3 innings in his second postseason start. He gave up eight overall and his team was out of it before it ever had a chance. The Dodgers quickly fell into a six-run hole from which they could never recover, and now they are headed to Los Angeles trailing the Phillies 2-0 in this best-of-seven series.
